Apple Testing An iPad Mini With A6 Processor Sans Retina Display

Up to now, I haven’t gotten myself Apple’s little tablet, the iPad Mini, as I feel that the Cupertino firm has somewhat cheated us when it released the Mini without a retina display.  And just recently, Google unleashed the newly rebooted Nexus 7 with its gorgeous 1920 x 1200 pixel screen so I’m wondering what is keeping Apple from giving the Mini the much-sought and long awaited retina display.

With rumors left and right saying Apple is not keen on updating the Mini’s screen this year; and add this latest finding by developer Nick Frey into the fray that Apple is testing an iPad Mini with a faster A6 processor, the same one in the iPhone 5, but without a retina display, and I think we’ve still got a very long wait ahead of us before we get our hands on a retina-toting iPad Mini.

From 9to5mac:

According to the provided information, Apple is considering three new iPad mini models: iPad “2,8,” iPad “2,9,” and iPad “2,10.” The respective code names for the devices are J75, J76, and J77. This points to one WiFi-only model and two cellular-compatible models (just like the current iPad minis). From the references, we can also infer that this potential iPad mini model will lack a Retina display. The versions of these references for Apple’s Retina display devices, such as the iPhone 5 and fourth-generation iPad, include hooks to images at a “@2x” mode. “@2x” is how developers reference app artwork that is built for a Retina display device. However, these new iPad minis lack the “@2x” hook, including only references to non-Retina images. Perhaps corroborating this is that the rumored Retina display iPad mini codename is “J85,” while the iPad mini model we have learned about is “J75.

I hate jargon but since we need to give credit where credit is due…

The main idea here folks is the iPad Mini is not going to get a retina display any time soon and though Apple is toying with different configurations/version of the Mini, we’re not sure what we’ll get in the end as our favorite adage here in Appleslut proves it time and again : nothing is definite with Apple unless Apple says it’s definite.

So, when will Apple release the iPad Mini with Retina Display, you ask?

Well, as we’ve said before, the iPad Mini 2 with retina display could be unleashed by Apple in 2014 or Apple may release an iPad Mini 2 without a retina display but with bumped up specs as early as the 3rd quarter of this year or, if we’re a bit unlucky, the 4th quarter of 2013.

It all depends on Apple really..

But one thing is for sure – and that nothing is for sure when Apple is concerned.

Such irony…

Keeping you posted on all things Apple.

Making it personal, always.
