iPhone 5 Rumors

Photo of iPhone 5 RenderingThe iPhone 4S has actually sold more units than the iPhone 4, and now, Apple is preparing to launch the next version: iPhone 5. There’s not a lot of confirmed information online about the yet-to-be-released iPhone 5, however there are a lot of rumors and speculations about it. Below I’ve listed the most interesting rumors…

The iPhone 5 will have a bigger display

According to an unnamed source from a manufacturer affiliated with Apple, the iPhone 5 will have a 4 inch display instead of the old 3.5 inch, but the resolution will stay the same at 960×640 pixels. That seems plausible, since the 3.5 inch unit has been too played out, and frankly it’s too small to use comfortably, especially after trying all the 4.0+ displays on other phones. 4 inches is the perfect size right now, and I’m sure Apple can fit it in a housing that is not much wider or longer than the iPhone 4S.

iPhone 5 will have a new design

According to the same source, the iPhone 5 will have a design that is different than the iPhone 4. They didn’t say what exactly will change, but it’s to be expected that the phone will be thinner at the very least. It’s not going to have a tapered design, either, which is not that much of an issue, actually. The iPhone 4 has pretty much a perfect design, but we can leave it to Apple to perfect it, that’s for sure.

Quad core processor

A quad core processor is what everyone is expecting on the iPhone 5, but according to the latest speculations, the phone will actually have a new, faster dual core. That seems reasonable, since quad cores consume more power, and don’t have that much to offer performance wise on a smartphone over a higher clocked dual core (the Qualcomm Krait has proven that already). The iPhone 5 will also most probably have 1 GB of RAM to complement the faster processor and new iOS capabilities.

It will have an NFC radio

Another rumor that might just be true is that the iPhone 5 will have an NFC radio. That is most likely true because the latest builds of iOS have support for NFC technology, and seeing as it is the future of short range communications between smartphones and tablets, Apple might implement it, just like they did with Thunderbolt on the MacBook.

3D & GSM?

There are other interesting rumors, like the speculations about a 3D display and global GSM radio, but those are unlikely since Apple doesn’t seem to be that interested in 3D (I believe it’s just a fad, as well), and they’d much rather release separate GSM and CDMA versions than a unified device that can be easily imported in other countries.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be released this summer, however it may be announced earlier, alongside the iPad 3 or the new Apple iTV. We don’t know exactly what to expect (especially since the iPhone 4S turned out to be quite different than what everyone expected), so I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
