OSX Lion isn’t just a new operating system for Mac – It’s the beginning of the end for the OSX operating system. In fact, it’s the start of a slow transition from OSX to IOS for all Macs. (update: OSX Lion Review)
The App Store
Apple hit a home run with the App Store because it brings in an estimated at $2.4 Billion. Plus, it’s the ideal way for users to buy and install apps / software because it’s cheap, and the user gets instant gratification with zero install issues. Like they say “it just works.”
With the Mac App Store, Apple will grow revenue and Mac owners can buy & install software faster than ever. It’s a win, win for everybody.
Developers Get New Customers
Think about all the Macs out there. Now add OSX Lion to 20, 50 or 90% of them. That’s a lot of new customers for software developers.
You’re thinking there’s no way 90% of Macs will upgrade to OSX Lion. I’m betting the adoption rate will be HUGE. Apple knows the App Store is a cash cow. They want the App Store on all Macs. That’s why OSX Lion will be the same price or even cheaper than Leopard. Maybe under $10. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave it away for free just to get the App Store on your Mac so you can start buying apps immediately.
I’m not a software developer, but I’d bet there are developers who are drooling to get their apps running on ALL Apple devices – including the Mac. Games like Angry Birds, Plants vs Zombies and all the top selling apps should be first in line.
The iMacPadBook? MacBook Touch?
What about and location based, social media apps like SCVNGR? I’d love use the app on my MacBook to check in when I’m working from the coffee shop! (on wi-fi of course) Doesn’t it seem ridiculous you can’t check in with a laptop app? Soon you’ll be able to do just that.
But the iPad has a touch screen! OSX Lion won’t support touch because the MacBook, iMac and CInema Displays don’t have touch screen!!!
You’re right. They don’t have touch screens…. YET.
The MacBook, iMac and CInema Displays WILL HAVE TOUCH SCREENS. Maybe not by the time Lion is released, but it’s definitely coming. Think about it…
If my Macbook had a touch screen, I’d never buy an iPad. The Macbook with touchscreen would be the perfect device. Perfect because you get the touch interaction with full keyboard… and the best part – a built-in kickstand you can position at the perfect angle! You won’t have to hold the damn thing for hours, like the iPad. Set it on your lap and touch the screen… Truly, a dream machine.
(Also, MacBook, iMac and CInema Displays will have Retina Displays too… Sweet!)
The Death of OSX
With the Mac App Store & Launchpad in OSX Lion, the line between iPad and your Mac becomes blurred. Your Mac will start to function like the IOS devices iPad, iPhone, iPod. Eventually OSX will become … extinct. And IOS will take its place on every electronic device made by Apple.
