The New G3 iPhone: Faster & Cheaper

As expected, the redesigned G3 iPhone
was announced this morning at the WWDC in San Fransisco. Some of the new features had been talked about online for months, but were just rumors and/or prayers of hopeful Apple fanatics before today.

Today, many of the rumors turned to flesh & blood facts when Stevie J. took the stage towards the end of the show. He mentioned 6 million iPhones have been sold in since its launch on July, 29th 2007. The majority of them are 8 Gigs, priced at $399.

New 3G iPhone Prices

The new 3G iPhone will come in 3 sizes at reduced cost:

  • 8 Gigs for only $199
  • 16 Gigs for $299
  • 32 Gigs for $399

Apple is advertising the new 3G 8 Gig version as “Twice as fast. Half the price.” That’s because the 3G network is over 2 times as fast than the current system, and the $199 price of the G3 8 Gig version is half of the current 8 Gig at $399.

Black is the new Black

The iPhone 3G is now rocking a slick, shiny black back panel and it’s slightly thinner than the current, silver model. Not into black? Apple is offering a white as a second color, but it’s only available on the 16 Gig model.

New 3G iPhone Features

3G Network - Obviously, this is a huge new feature, probably the most attractive and noticeable for the casual user. However, the iPhone will now support Microsoft Exchange Server for businesses. Another giant addition, but most of us won’t pay too much attention.

True GPS – True, real-time GPS will be available through Google Maps on the new iPhone G3. No more approximate locations or averaged triangulations. Real GPS.

AppStore – Download 3rd party applications and games directly to your phone over the G3 network, over Wi-Fi or through iTunes on your Mac. Lots of apps, tons of games and a few of them were shown at WWDC today and can be purchased for just $9.99 USD.

MobileMe – This is not just an iPhone feature, it’s a Mac service that now is working with iPhone and iPod Touch so we’ll take a quick look. MobileMe was named .Mac, but its been given a complete overhaul. Now you can subscribe for $99 for a single user ($149 for families) and get all your standard .Mac features like a Mac email address, iDisk, iCal & Address Book synching. Now it’s better because it will sync with the iPhone so all your contacts, photos and calendar information can be updated instantly across your iPhone, Mac and/or PC. Amazing.

MobileMe is also available for iPod Touch!

Sign up for MobileMe and get your new iPhone G3 on July 11th at the Apple Store

Conclusion

I’ve got my list of favorite 3G iPhone features in my head already. We’ll talk about them and how I think I’ll use them, if I plan to upgrade from my current 4GB iPhone sometime tomorrow.
