My Macworld ‘08 Wish List: An Even Greener Apple

tie-die-t-shirt1.jpgSo tomorrow’s the big day, the beginning of the high holidays for the Applesluts of the world. What new wonders will be revealed?

Those making the pilgrimage to San Francisco’s Moscone Center for Macworld Expo (January 15th to 18th) will no doubt be rewarded for their devotion. From the dazzle of the exhibit halls to the schmoozy Birds-of-a-Feather meetings, from the hot-ticket Hands-on MacLabs to the guided tours and the Best of Show Awards, there will be enough cool shit to look at and play with to inspire even the most jaded among us.

Not to mention the synergistic potential of 40,000 or so tech-heads converging in a frenzy of techno-splendor. The vast chorus of ringtones alone should be worth the price of admission.

But of course the Big Moment, the event that has us holding our collective breath, is the word handed down from the high priest himself. At 9:00 tomorrow morning, our man Steve will deliver his keynote address and reveal what’s in store for us in 2008. (Check out Engadget’s live coverage)

Rumors and speculation abound, of course. Could anything possibly have the same impact as the iPhone last year?

Tall order.

The consensus seems to be that he’s likely to unveil an ultra-portable MacBook. Movie rental through iTunes is also a strong possibility.

Good, yeah, sure, fine. Cool, I suppose, but whatever.

Know what I want? A greener Apple.

Yeah, I know. It’s kind of like “What do you want for Christmas?” “World peace.” And not that he’s asking me anyway.

But what I want more than anything is for the man to walk out on that stage and announce that starting today, every product Apple makes will be greener, way greener, than the money I plunk down to buy it. Greener than green.

Today, not next year. He made a good start with his Greener Apple initiative in May. But how about this: How about starting today, Apple turns its legendary ingenuity toward creating a truly green technology company. Starting today, Apple becomes the kind of visionary leader we know it can be. (Check out Greenpeace’s call-to-action.)

I love Apple. And I want it to be a company I can get behind all the way. I want them to use the leadership they’ve rightly earned to do the right thing, and do it big, do it with vision. Give us some of that good ol’ time Apple religion, Steve.

Reinvent the color green.

So, okay, I told you mine. What’s on your wish list?

They could also do something similar to what Aveda is doing with wind power. I mean it’s great and all to get the toxic chemicals out of your product and to initiate recycling programs for your products. But what about the power to make your products?

Aveda purchases Windsource energy from their local power company equal to amount they use in production. Their purchase of Winsource energy increases the amount of wind energy available to the entire power grid from which they draw from.

I don’t know, it seems like a good start.
